50 Amp RV Service...
August 8, 2023 - For RVs, you will mainly be dealing with a 30-amp or 50-amp service. Your RV will require one type or the other, and fortunately, there's an easy way to check which type of plug your RV has: 30-amp plugs have three pins, and 50-amp plugs have four pins.

A 30-amp service is more common in smaller RVs with fewer power-hungry appliances. For example, you will usually find only single AC units in 30-amp service RVs. A 30-amp RV plug has a single 120-volt hot pin, a flat neutral, and a round ground pin. Where large RVs usually have a 50-amp service to power their more lavish setups (like double AC units, washer/dryers, etc.). A 50-amp plug has two 120-volt hot pins, a flat neutral pin, and a round ground. A 30-amp RV can handle up to 3,600 watts; a 50-amp RV brings you up to 12,000 watts, so the increase in power is very substantial.
When you know what type of power your RV requires, then it is just a matter of making sure your plugs are the correct size to fit into a given power source; be that your generator or a pedestal at a campground. Adapters are available to allow you to plug RV power cords into different size power source outlets.
With an adapter you can plug your 30 amp RV cord into a 50-amp power receptacle, such as a power pedestal at a campground without worrying about frying your RVs electrical system. However, know that the maximum power you can use is 30 amps, regardless of the receptacle you plug your cord into. So, even if you plug into a 50 amp receptacle you will still be limited to 30 amps. You would only do this if you have a 30 amp RV cord and the only receptacle available to you, say at a campground, is a 50 amp receptacle.
If you use an adapter and plug your 50-amp RV cord into a 30-amp receptacle then you are not going to be operating at full power, so you will be limited with what devices you can run at the same time. If you have an RV with two air conditioners you probably will only be able to run one at a time. Once again you would only do this if a 50 amp receptacle is not availble to you at the time.
To plug your 30-amp or 50-amp RV cord into a portable generator, you will want to use an adapter made specifically for this purpose. Generator plugs come in 3-prong and 4-prong styles, so you'll need to make sure your adapter fits your generator's plug style. Be aware that these styles have nothing to do with whether the RV cord is 30 amps or 50 amps—30-amp cords can be adapted to fit both 3-prong and 4-prong generator plugs, as can 50-amp RV cords.
One tip is to consider reducing your motorhome's power requirements, such as by installing LED bulbs in place of standard bulbs or replacing the microwave with a smaller one requireing less wattage.
